A Brief History of Harrisville

Harrisville’s story begins in 1850, when Urban Stewart built the first house in the area, just three years after pioneers first entered the Salt Lake Valley. That September, Stewart fired at a figure moving through his corn patch at night and killed Terikee, a Shoshone chief. The tragedy led to a retaliatory killing and forced Stewart to leave the area. A memorial marker in Harrisville still recognizes the site today.

In 1851, Martin Henderson Harris built a log home west of Four Mile Creek. A nephew of Book of Mormon witness Martin Harris, he became the community’s first permanent settler, first school teacher, and longtime record keeper. Families including the Taylors, Shurtliffs, Murdocks, and Childs soon followed, and the settlement officially took the name Harrisville in 1868 when it became a county precinct.

Early residents built a resourceful local economy. Farmers drew water first from Four Mile Creek and later from the Ogden River. Brickmaking, started by the Shurtliff family, grew into a major business, and a brickyard operated in town until 2012. Harrisville also produced washboards, cheese, brooms, and molasses, and for a short time even made silk cloth.

Harrisville incorporated as a township on April 9, 1962, with Leland Saunders as its first leader. Less than two years later it became a third-class city with just 867 residents. Since then, the city has grown steadily into the thriving community it is today.

New neighborhoods, including the Ben Lomond Views development on the grounds of the former Ben Lomond Golf Course, are bringing fresh homes to the area, and residents still come together for community celebrations that honor the city’s pioneer roots.
